Muth Mirror Systems developed a next-generation LED display application in 2006, which we termed Blind Spot Detection Display, or BSDD. Muth’s BSDD collaborates with radar sensing vendors (Autoliv, Continental, Hella) to enhance the safety of the vehicle by conveniently displaying an icon to the driver in the outside mirrors when another vehicle, or object, is in its Blind Spot. Muth currently offers our global customers numerous versions of our Blind Spot Displays and today this technology is used on many popular Ford, Mazda, GM, Toyota, Chrysler, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Jaguar and Land Rover models. Muth Mirror Systems was the inventor of this LED mirror technology and is a world leader in this next-gen LED mirror-based safety application as we have shipped over 2 million units of our BSDD product and over 9 million units of our Signal Mirror ® technology to our customers.
How BSDD Works
The Blind Spot Detection Display is an active driver safety assistance alert that informs the driver when a vehicle, or object, is in its blind spot. The radar sensors are positioned in the rear quarter panel of the vehicle and emit a sweeping radar beam that covers both sides of the vehicle from the outside mirror position to about 10 feet back. If the radar sensor detects a vehicle in the right side blind spot, then the Muth BSDD indicator icon will appear in the driver’s right side mirror and same for the left side. The system alerts the driver at high speeds as well at low speeds.
There are over 500,000 lane-changing and merging accidents in the U.S. each year and these products are designed to dramatically lower those incidents. This system can also be used for Cross-Traffic Warning, which is when a driver is backing out of a stall, or parking spot, and does not have good vision of what’s approaching from the left, or right. If another vehicle is approaching, the Muth BSDD icon will appear in the outside mirror on the appropriate side where that vehicle is coming from.

Will you be offerering this system to the aftermarket
Jerome,
At present, this system is not available in the aftermarket. Our Blind Spot Detection Display is one component of a larger, more complicated system which is built into a vehicle from the factory. We do not supply the entire system ourselves, only the mirror/display. We’ll flag you for notification if we offer an aftermarket system in the future.

Do the mirrors show blind spot vehicles and have turn signal blinkers.? I have an Altima. Do you have mirrors for Nissan altima.? Also, are you looking for dealers in Wi. ?
Richard,
The Blind Spot Detection Display is only available as an original equipment option at this time. The Signal® function is likely to be available for the Altima. We would need to know what model year you have to be absolutely sure.

I would be really interested in this system too for my 2009 Lexus ES350. I have a neck injury that limits my head turning left or right to about 40 degrees or so. My blind spot is even larger as a result. This system would help me a lot.
Gregg,
As you are probably aware, this system is not available in the aftermarket. Our Blind Spot Detection Display is one component of a larger, more complicated system which is built into a vehicle from the factory. Even at the OEM level, we do not supply the entire system ourselves, only the mirror/display. We’ll flag you for notification if we offer an aftermarket system in the future for your ES350.

Is the BSDD available on the Harley Davidson mirrors?
Thanks.
Dear Len,
Thank you for your inquiry!
Currently, we only offer the BSDD technology via the original equipment market. It is only part of a complete blind-spot detection system. We do not have a complete system to offer in the aftermarket.

Is your blind-spot detection available in new 2011 Nissan Altimas? I am looking for a new car and would really like the blind spot detection in it.
Lisa
Lisa,
Thanks for the question. I know there are some Nissan models which offer or will offer this, but I’m not sure if that particular model offers the blind-spot detection. Your best bet would be to visit your local dealership and discuss it with them in more detail.

I have installed the Signal® mirrors on my 1998 Mustang. They work great & have been extremely beneficial on numerous occasions. I look forward to seeing the aftermarket BSDD product. You have proven quality & excellence performance standards.
